how to incorporate bright pink paint into a girl's room

So a little while back I had a client email me for an online consult. He had just moved into a new condo in the city with his daughter. We worked on choosing two grey paint colours for his main space, and then he asked for help with his little girls room, shown bottom right in the floorplan below.

It seems like most young girls request a pink room at some point, and it's almost always fuchsia, or another shocking shade of this colour that they like. The question is how do you work this colour into their rooms without it becoming garish?

My client asked me to find a way to tone down the colour, and work in black, which is what his daughter had asked for. This is not a large space, and so we needed to incorperate the pink without it overwhelming the space. Thought maybe some of you are struggling with the same dilemma in your own homes, and would be interested in the options we discussed.

First of all, I asked him to show his daughter the photo below - was it really bright pink she wanted, or just pink? A softer pink could be paired with black and used on all her wall space and the effect would be soft and lighthearted.

Nope. MUST be bright pink.
How about bringing the bright pink through accents?

No dice. ON THE WALLS. Right. This girl knows what she wants! Moving back on track...

First of all, there is the accent wall. I'm not a huge fan of accent walls, but in a child's room, on the headboard wall, they can work. I suggested a white bedding, warm white on the other three walls, and adding the black accents on those walls via picture frames. This striped treatment can be achieved by using a high gloss and flat paint in the same shade.

and while we are on the topic of stripes, this is cute as well....

Second, the partial wall options - these emphasize the horizontal and thus make the room feel larger.

love the black pinstripe detailing on this version....

The next look brings in slightly more pink on the walls but still allows for some visual relief -
three tints of pink in an ombre horizontal stripe. Darling, isn't it?

But what if we NEED to have pink on all the walls, to bathe ourselves in the very brightest pink out there? Well, you can always cheat a little - bring the ceiling colour down a few feet and have the pink meet it (I did this in my son's room when he insisted on royal blue walls in a space with north facing windows). You'd be amazed what a difference this 20 - 30" makes...

My client and his daughter mulled these over, and in the end she fall in love with the striped headboard accent wall idea. I suggested Benjamin Moore Peony 2079-30 on the headboard wall in a semi-gloss and matte to create the striped effect.

If you are working with white furniture, like my clients, you want to ensure that the walls are a warm white, because white furniture is seldom a true white. If the white on the walls is too cool then the furniture will look dingy. Benjamin Moore Simply White OC-117 is soft and warm with out being too yellow, and works well with Peony on the three remaining walls.

I suggested black be used sparingly, on picture frames, desk accessories and a pillow or two.
This keep contrast to a minimum and doesn't create a lot of visual distraction.

I'm happy to say that both my client and his daughter love her finished room, so my job is done!

Have you ever used an option like these to tone down the impact of a vibrant colour in your home?
Which one would you choose?

the painting that inspired a nursery...

You know how one single item can inspire an entire space?

I found this painting by Sydney Edmunds when I was putting together some design boards for a client who was staging some condos in NYC. It's a repro done on canvas, which is the right price point for a rental. Although the tones worked perfectly with the cherry flooring, the resulting board was not generic enough for staging (despite my attempts to tone down it's brilliance!). We went with another version, which I'll show you in another post, lol...

but I couldn't forget the painting...
and since D's cousin is about to have her second little pumpkin I have babes on the brain...

Who says kids can't have real art?

That's a bigger thought - that may deserve it's own post, yes?

Crushing On Colour: Heather from Love Your Space

Happy, happy monday, lovelies!

I hope that it's a bit chilly wherever you are right now,
because this zinger of a post is going to warm you up!

Today's Crushing On Color post is all about raspberry,
and Heather from Love Your Space
has rounded up some delish pics for you...

enjoy!

Anne-Marie is such an amazing resource on colour,
I'm constantly consulting her posts for practical advice.
We've both been collecting photos with today's object of desire

--raspberry--

and I'm so glad she let me put together this post!

My family of four moved into our current house just over a year ago
when we retruned to the Twin Cities, where I grew up.
Our house is bigger and more modern than the places we have previously lived,
and while I didn't come into the space with any preconceived notions about decorating,
 one thing quickly became clear:

the house wanted Raspberry.

It started with the guest room curtains,
made it's way to my daughters' headboards
and an accent in the living room.
 And dining room.
I never considered myself a red person, but raspberry?

On the cusp of pink.  Both regal and playful.  Definitely rich.
As masculine as a pink can be.
And suddenly h-o-t hot
(as my dad would say when ordering his french fries.)

Doesn't it seem like it is EVERYWHERE?

I love that raspberry is so versatile.  Surprising, I know, but it truly works in ALL decor.

Raspberry can modernize a traditional interior

Or wake up a modern, neutral space.

This is a color with major impact, whether you use a little

or a lot

It's a bold color, but no need to be afraid.

Raspberry is friendly.

It elevates white

Plays nicely with jewel tones

And has an especial affinity for the (also hot) peacock, teal, and turquoise blue.

(I'm a redhead.  We know blue is our colour.)

As if that wasn't enough, raspberry can quickly impart a global, bohemian vibe.

So what are you waiting for?
Surely you need a little raspberry in your life.

I'm not sure I have enough in mine, and the living room curtains are just calling for some raspberry trim.....

Heather

Thank you so much, Heather!

I have been collecting pictures of raspberry infused rooms,
but I've got to say that yours are better!
That first living room, with it's luxe velvet chairs, is one of my favourite spaces.
And how cool would it be to work in that just a little office?

If you haven't been over to Heather's blog,
you are missing out on a little bit of fantastic...
she is a decorator with fabulous taste,
and shares her design processes regularly,
as well as bit from her own space
and some great finds.

Today, since we are celebrating all things raspberry,
she is going to show a little fabulousness in action in her own home...

Simplicity loves Energetic Color

Right now I am completely obsessed
with neutral spaces that use saturated color in clever and uncommon ways,
and if this home by Kay Douglas doesn't qualify, I don't know what does.

Revelling in the contrast of fabrics, finishes and accessories chosen with such restraint-
and then bursts of joyful color, splashed about with abandon.

(Thank you, Verdigris Vie, for sharing this one - I don't usually pick up a copy of Veranda,
but perhaps it's time to start!)

Amazing how the lack of pattern and accessories can balance out the intense energy of these hues, isn't it?

Makes me want to put away half the bits and bobs around my own place!

Hope you all had a happy thanksgiving here in the north -
we survived two days of hosting huge dinners,
(23 lbs of raast beef, two turkeys, two spiral hams, potatoes, yams, brussel sprouts,...  you get the idea!!)
and had such a fantastic weekend visiting with our families.

Topped it all off with a fall boat ride yesterday,
touring our muskoka coastlines and admiring the gorgeous fall colors.

It left me glowing, truly, and very grateful for all that we are blessed with.
Weekends like that are what it's all about....xo

Crushing on Color: Poppy from Project Gadabout

Today's Crushing on Color post is brought to you by
the creative wonder,

The ceiling in my office is littered with lanterns.
All different colors and sizes.
It started off as a simple little collection and grew into something much bigger.
What I love about the lanterns, is that when my day becomes to much,
I take a moment, lay on the floor and drift away with my lanterns.

The best part is watching my cat Marmalade;
somedays he is really determined to find a way to play with them.
He has yet to succeed, but it’s fun watching him try.
Plus my office is just a bottle of champagne and a
few hors d'oeuvres away from being a cocktail party!

Organization is one of my hobbies (I know, it's a strange hobby).
As a result, I take organization pretty seriously.
So it's no surprise that most of my storage is colorful.
It makes opening up my closet or glancing past my shelves
a lot like stepping through a box of crayons.
Oddly enough, it also helps me remember where I put things.
Trust me, a color system is much more fun than numbers and boring labels.

It’s absolutely amazing how much fun a grocery list
or to do list can be when you add a little color.
I rarely use the typical; black, red or blue ink,

I’m more of a Fandango Pink or Deep Sea Blue.

I love taking notes or just doodling with a full array of colors at hand.
As I’ve already mention before I love what bic is doing with the permanant marker.
Copic is my personal favorite with their ability for great blending and shading.

I’ve seen this tape used so many ways it’s impossible to not love it.
From wrapping presents, a delightful border,
or an amazing Art Installation, like the one found in the Kate Spade New York.
In my office, however, we use it for amazing games of wall tick tac toe
or just taping a co-worker to their seat.
Though most recently it was used to add hopscotch
in the hallway leading to the break room!
It makes a typical day at work a little more entertaining.

Pantone is the expert on color.
So it’s easy to see how they are a big part of my world.
With the introduction of their iPhone App finding the perfect color
on the go just got a lot easier.
But my Pantone Eyewear is my personal favorite.
One frame that will consistently fulfill your ever changing preference towards color.
It’s like a mood ring but for eyewear.
Pantone also offers a plethora of items for the home,
from usb flash drivers to adorable mugs.
But for most designers, amateur and professional,
the Geo System and Guide has become their Bible of Color.

The eight year old in me was overjoyed when she discovered Make Up For Ever!
They have a large color palette, that can inspire High Definition, Daring looks.
I have to admit every once and a while I feel the need
to let my inner eight year old out to play in my make up.
So whether you are heading out to work or just spending a Saturday night in,
Make Up For Ever is something you have to try.

There are so many ways to brighten up your day so here are few more options to try.
If you have to wear a uniform or color is frowned upon where you work,
use your undergarments to brighten your day.

Never underestimate the power of Yellow Panties.

Reading glasses don’t have to be dowdy, so pick a fun fabulous pair.

The girl has some serious graphic design skills, yes?!
As if this post wasn't enough,
Poppy has provided me a gorgeous Shopping Guide for all of these goodies -
heaps of secret sources that I did not know about...
head over to her post today to download it...

Project Gadabout is  such an entertaining, bubbly little spot -
it's like a girls night out in every post.
I am always amazed at Poppy's creativity and wit.

And that wraps up our Crushing on Color posts.

I can't thank these ladies enough for their time and effort,
and the fabulousness they have brought to the blog the past two weeks -
MWAH!

Since we've had such a great time with it,
I'm thinking this may become a regular feature of the blog -
so if you are interested in guest posting,
let me know -
I'd love to hear about your love for color -
