Palm Beach Week: Bringing the Beach Home

Well, lovelies,

after a week of looking at design through jet-setting-rose-colored glasses,

we've come to the last layer-on-the-luxe,
indulge-in-sorbet-color,
prep-at-the-beach post.

For those of us who would love a little bit of this fabulousness in their own homes,
today we are looking at spaces that aren't in Palm Beach, but brought the look home.

This Nantucket lovely made the rounds,
so you may have seen it before,
but it just begged to be re-visited.

In the 80's I loved peach. LOVED. 

And since then there really hasn't been much appeal, 

but look at these walls - what a warm, delicious backdrop for

all the other color.

This home, found via Design Sponge,
literally took my breath away last fall when I saw it.
Of any of the Palm Beach inspired spaces I found, this one is perfection.

This little vignette, centre, is stunning.
And that vintage malachite wallpaper is so much like
the Cole and Son version I have been lobbying for in the dining room
(D. isn't a fan)

This living room, left and centre, and dining room, right, are perfection.

Again, loving the coral,

and the of course, the high gloss navy wall.

Look at that chevron carpet!

The golden tree mural was hand painted.

Designer Meg Braff may be based out of New York,

but she brings a bit of sunshine style wherever she goes.

I love the yellow hallway, below.

The Palm Beach lifestyle was created by the wealthy,

a jet-set crew of entrepreneurs,
but anyone can add bits of happy to their space.

Vintage beach classics, 

with layers of luxe and pattern,

and a playful palette.

Must say, I've gotten my fill of these hues this week,
and I 'm sure you did too!
Everyone has to decide for themselves how much color they want to live with.
I paint the walls in my home every few years,
which means I don't mind committing to a color on the walls
because it's s a fairly simple and inexpensive process to change it out.
I prefer to buy quality furnishings on the neutral side,
and lets the walls and accessories set the tone.

In any case,
you can take off the sunglasses,
I've got a feeling the next posts may be about restful neutrals or
black and white!

Palm Beach Week: Beach House, Jonathon Adler Style

Ask Jonathon Adler what he does and he'll say he makes things.

That's a very humble description coming from the man who, 

despite calling himself a Potter, 

has created his own design empire -

 all based on his signature style, Happy Chic.

Really, anyone who describes his style as Happy Chic has promise in my

makes your-own-rules, live-with-what-you-love,

don't-take-your-home-so-seriously world :)

His pottery may be stunning in white...

but his interiors are dripping in color...

and his stunning Palm Beach getaway is every bit the glamour girl she should be.

it's interesting to note here that all the walls are white except the guest bedroom.

All this juicy color is brought in with textiles, accessories and small furnishings - 

that orange table is everywhere!

Jonathon once remarked that he ventured down to Palm Beach on vacation as lark,

expecting to find old ladies everywhere.

Instead he fell in love with the classic, luxe, preppy vibe,

and created his ocean getaway.

I would LOVE to spend weekends there!

This weekend I will be posting some Palm Beach goodness that isn't found in Palm Beach..

loads of people incorperate this style in their homes,

and it's really easy to do.

Palm Beach Week: Celerie Kemble Style

Celerie Kemble is a Palm Beach girl whose style

exemplifies the luxe and whimsy of this wonderful spot.

She has an incredible design philosophy...

but rather that they have evolved to what they are.

Palm Beach Week: Lilly Pulitzer Love

Some people are one-of-a-kind.

They have that certain joie de vivre that inspires the rest of us.

Lilly Pulitzer is that kind of woman.

A New York native living in Palm Beach with her husband,

Lilly ran a juice stand at their orchards.

After creating some gloriously colored shifts that camouflage the inevitable splatters,

customers were so enamoured she had her dressmaker create extra

"Lillys" to sell at the store.

Later divorced and remarried, 

Lilly Rousseau continued operate her company under the Lilly Pulitzer name.

Her shifts were worn by everyone, 

including dear friend and First Lady Jackie Kennedy and her daughter Caroline.

In 1984 Lilly retired and closed down her clothing line,

but in 1993 it was revived and the Lilly Pulitzer empire now includes

homegoods, shoes, jewelry and mens clothing.

I've read and re-read her Guides to Colorful Entertaining and Colorful Holidays.

what comes across so clearly is how bright Lilly's spirit is.

As her son Peter says,

"mom has an amazing zest for life.

It's like a big hug."

Not one to get hung up on details,

 it's Lilly's "who gives a fig"attitude and her incredible hospitality

that has made every day a party, literally.

If you haven't read these books, go get them!

Her Palm Beach Store is the epitome of Lilly,

who said long ago that she had an aversion to

"people who didn't respond to her humor".

Feeling a bit spring feverish here, so

this week I am going to bring you my Palm Beach favourites -

homes, locals, shopping. 

On friday we'll look at how to incorperate this

whirl of fun into your own space.

The people that started it all..

Henry Morison Flagler built the original Palm Beach hotels, 

The Royal Poinciana Hotel and The Breakers hotel.

then he built himself Whitehall.

The Wrightsman's Stephane Boudin - designed home

set the tone for the color and pattern we see today.

today families like the Lauders embrace the playful layers of Palm Beach decor..

How many pink sinks have been removed from homes? They added one!

The walls are the stars here, furnishing are clean-lined and fabrics are solids.

Patterns upon patterns, colors upon colors - after all, if you can't have fun here, where can you?!

This bedroom is so well done - perfectly matched intensities make the watermelon and lime combo sing!

These walls are perfection - complements apricot and sky blue are lively, 

but not as energetic as their more saturated counterparts,

blue and orange, which are used as accents.

A cohesive scheme is used throughout, varying intensity of color rather than palette.

The bits of yellow and green keep an otherwise cool blue and white palette from becoming cold.

Just makes you want to break out the flip flops and cocoa butter, doesn't it?!
